This is a fun filled spectacular evening of festivities for the entire family, starting with the community spaghetti dinner and craft fair at 3:00 p.m.  Other activities include street entertainment, food concessions, Santa visits to light up Ladysmith, Kinsman Parade, and spectacular firework display.

The Festival of Lights extends from the last Thursday in November to the first Sunday in January; during which Ladysmith comes alive with festive street decorations and shimmering lights in celebration of Christmas.

During the Light-Up ceremony on November 29th, there will be no parking along the highway, and 1st Avenue will be closed to traffic from 2:00 p.m. until light-up.  If needed, we can provide complimentary drop-off and pick-up for guests staying at our B&B for the night.

As a premier Vancouver Island B&B, there is direct beach access from Beachside Garden B&B for our guests!

One of these very convenient sites is the Rock Wall at the Elliott Beach Marine Park.  Entry to the beach and the rock wall is easy through a ramp from the parking area.  The current and tide at Elliott Beach do not present problem for diving, making this a very popular site.  Many diving lessons are conducted here as well.  There is a moderate amount of marine life such as shrimps, crabs, giant octopus, fishes, sea slugs and snails, sea anemones, sea cucumbers, starfishes, etc.  The various species found here are well documented by Terry Fidler, and indeed Terry provides many fabulous pictures of these marine creatures.  Here are a few samples:

Other great dives around the 49^th Parallel include:

• Boeing 737 and artificial reefs near Chemainus.  This is the world’s only Boeing 737 dive site, and over 100 species of marine life have been identified living on this aircraft.
• Bare Point, Chemainus
• Various historical shipwrecks in Porlier Pass

There are various diving charters in the local areas, for equipment rental as well as diving adventures.

However, the Vancouver Island Paddlefest 2011 took place at Transfer Beach, Ladysmith on May 14 & 15, 2011.  It is a trade show and workshop event for new to experienced paddlers to try out the latest gear.  May 14 also marked the official opening of the BC Marine Trails Network.

This is a great and fun filled event for all with live music, plenty of  giveaway Prizes, class Trophies and dash Plaques!  Beachside Garden B & B is an ideal accommodation for both the spectators, and the participants showing their prized car.  There are plenty of off road parking on the property.  Earlier than usual scrumptious breakfast can be provided to ensure participants get to the venue on time.  As this is a very popular event which attracts many out of town visitor, please make your reservation early to secure a room.

The 8th annual Ladysmith Show & Shine took place on August 20, 2011, on 1st Avenue in Ladysmith, with plenty of polished steel and chrome to admire.

We were lucky to have a mini preview as one of our B&B guests, Gordon, was showing his 1963 Chevy Impala.  He and his wife Beverly stayed with us for two days.   Here is Gordon’s Impala, which has won about 30 trophies over the last 7 years.
